Year 5

The highest quality care and education for all our children

At Oswald Road Primary School we aim to provide the highest quality care and education for all our children thereby giving them a strong foundation for their future learning. We create a safe and happy environment with motivating and enjoyable learning experiences that enable children to become confident and independent. We value the individual child and work alongside parents, carers and others to meet their needs and help every child to reach their full potential.

In Year 5, we are dedicated to exploring the Year 5 curriculum and preparing our children for Year 6, so they’re ready to hit the ground running for their final year at Oswald Road.

We practise spellings in lessons and have informal tests.  We also monitor spellings within all other writing.

Reading Expectations

Wednesday is when we read for pleasure and it’s a chance for class teachers to listen to readers.  All children have a black reading record for the 40 assigned books and some children will have individual reading records.

40 Books List- Year 5

Homework

There is an expectation that children practice their times tables via TT Rockstars. Daily reading at home is also encouraged. The children have a reading journal which they are to use to creatively respond to their reading for pleasure book. Each class has a curated compilation of 40 books which the children are expected to read during their time in Year 5.
Each year group has a homework task grid – see link below – the activities are designed to be screen-free and to enhance the children’s learning within school as well as their social and emotional well being. We encourage the children to engage in the activities throughout the term – evidencing them however they see fit (on paper or via SeeSaw).
Via the half termly update, teachers will also advise on any other, optional, revision you and your child may wish to engage in.
Mrs Howard also sends out a Word of the Week to encourage our spellings learning.

Accidents, Sickness & Medication

There is always a member of staff with a relevant Paediatric First Aid Qualification in each of the classrooms and an up-to-date first aid box is kept on the premises at all times. Minor accidents are recorded on a secure online system.

Please inform us if your child contracts an infectious illness/disease or if they have any other medical problems that we should be aware of as soon as possible. We are unable to accept children who are ill. Please do not send them for 48 hours after sickness and/or diarrhoea. Any child suffering from an infectious disease should be kept home from school for the appropriate period of time advised by the doctor.

The Reception staff will keep up-to-date records on children’s health (eg. allergies). If your child needs medication, you will need to complete the relevant consent forms and hand in medication via the school office- please speak to your child’s teacher. Please also visit our policies page to read the Supporting Pupils at School with Medical Conditions Policy.
