Richard Farrow
Assistant Headteacher (Years 1-3)
At Oswald Road Primary School we aim to provide the highest quality care and education for all our children thereby giving them a strong foundation for their future learning. We create a safe and happy environment with motivating and enjoyable learning experiences that enable children to become confident and independent. We value the individual child and work alongside parents, carers and others to meet their needs and help every child to reach their full potential.
Year 2 is an exciting one. We always notice a huge difference from the new children who arrive in September to the ones we say goodbye to in July. Throughout the year, as well as having lots of fun, we make sure the children are prepared to make the move upstairs to Key Stage 2.
What I love about Oswald Road…
It is such a welcoming, friendly and inclusive school. I love celebrating different events and special days with our children and seeing how excited they are to participate!
Things I like to do in my spare time…
I enjoy hiking and exploring with my family, gardening, playing the piano, dancing, reading and playing Kubb.

Spending time with my friends and family, particularly watching and playing lots of different sports with my 3 boys

We begin the year by reviewing Phase 5 phonics including alternative spellings following the ELS (Essential Letters and Sounds Programme). When the children are ready, they move on to the NNS (No Nonsense Spelling Framework). Here we look at different spelling patterns and useful ways of remembering them.

We have interventions for children who need them, to revisit sounds where required.

Reading information…
Oxford Owl e-Books
To go hand in hand with the ELS scheme, sometimes books will be set by teachers on Oxford Owl and this is an e-book. To access these books, you will need to log into Oxford Owl with your child’s details as provided. All children have access, however this is most relevant to Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children. While e-books could be set as book band books, they are also available for general reading pleasure school wide. Click here for more information about Oxford Owl e-Books.

Every child should read to an adult at home every day (this is the most valuable help you can give your child).
Spellings will be assigned on Spelling Shed on a weekly basis.
A maths quiz will be set weekly on EdShed.
You may find the following documents helpful when reading with your child:
Reading Comprehension Parent Handout
The children require shorts/leggings and t-shirts for gym and dance (indoor PE) and clothing suitable for outdoor exercise (eg. jogging bottoms and hoodie) for outdoor PE. These are to be worn in to school on the allocated PE days. The guidelines say that children should be barefoot for gym and dance but we would ask that they wear sensible footwear for outdoor games and warm clothes in the winter. Please name your child’s clothing.
Please make sure your child’s name is on their lunchbox.
Coats and bags should be put on the pegs outside of the classroom (Mr Farrow’s class pegs are inside the classroom). Please name your child’s coat.
Year 2 children are to line up on the pitches and the teacher will walk them into class at 8:35am. Children arriving after their line but before 8:40am will need to walk to class by themselves.
Drop-Off: 8.30am (lines go in at 8:35am)
Pick-Up: 3:15pm
Our PPA (Planning, Preparation and Assessment) time will be on Friday afternoon and covered by Ben Caldwell, Kieran Bentley and Nicky Appleby.
